Capital One – Amazon Data Breach

The Villages Computer Club
"At the end of July, we learned that a former Amazon employee is responsible for hacking 106 million, that’s 106,000,000., customer applications for Capitol One credit cards. An arrest was made on July 29, 2019. The data that was obtained as a consequence of this hack included about 140,000 social security numbers and roughly 80,000 bank account numbers. The data stolen was consumer and small business applications submitted from 2005 thru early 2019. This data was stored in the cloud at an Amazon Web Services (AWS) location. Capital One has indicated that those individuals involved in this breach will be contacted by Capital One directly via letter or email. Warning, this means if you get a phone call from anyone representing themselves as a Capital One or Government employee who wants to assist you because your info was stolen, IT IS A SCAM – do not fall for it. Just hang up.
The best defense is still freezing your credit with each of the major credit reporting bureaus (it’s now free to do so) and using the services offered by the majors to check your credit report periodically. You are entitled to one free report from each bureau every 12 months. Stagger your requests to each
bureau so that you get one free report every 4 months. If you know you been hacked in the past it may be wise to pay for more frequent reports but that is for you to decide."
