"Summer is travel time in the U.S., which got us thinking about records created when our ancestors packed up and left town. One of the most exciting records can be a U.S. passport application.
Although passports weren't required until 1941 (with some exceptions), many American citizens still got one before heading abroad. The State Department issued more than 1,684,280 passports between 1810 and 1925. And each one has a story.

1821: American trappers & traders begin to arrive.
1848: US gained control of portions of area as a result of Mexican War.
1854: Gold discovered around Tubac.
