2016 VGS Seminar Registration Information: 
The Guest Speaker for our February 24, 2016 Villages Genealogical Society’s Annual Seminar will be J. Mark Lowe CG. Mr. Lowe is a full-time professional genealogist, author, and teacher who researches primarily in original records and manuscripts throughout the south. Mark has published articles in APGQ, North Carolina Genealogical Society Quarterly, SPEAK!, The Longhunter, and other society publications. His weekly local history article appears in the Robertson County [Tenn] Times. He is Director of the Regional In-Depth Genealogical Studies Alliance (RIGS Alliance), a week-long hands-on research session focusing on original documents and manuscripts in cooperation with the National Archives. He is also an instructor at IGHR (Institute for Genealogical & Historical Research) at Samford University and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (UGA). He is a former officer and Board member for the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), Past President of the Association of Professional Genealogists, a fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association and was awarded the APG – Grahame T. Smallwood, Jr. Award. Registration for our members has begun.

Bus Information: 
A state-of-the-art bus will pick up conference goers about 7am on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Wal-mart on Rt.27. It will also stop in Leesburg at the Palm Plaza shopping center (in front of Publix).

Return trip will start at 5pm. Cost is only $20 round trip. Send check made out to Karen Jorgensen, and mail to Karen Jorgensen, PO Box 1713, Windermere, FL 34786. No refunds. Editor's Note: I have attended this conference several times and it is one of the best annual seminars in Florida every year. I will also be the bus trip coordinator.

1836: The match is patented.
1861: Western Union completes the first transcontinental telegraph line, putting the Pony Express out of business.
1901: Anna Edson Taylor, 43, is the first woman to go safely over Niagara Falls in a barrel. She made the attempt for the cash award offered, which she put toward the loan on her Texas ranch.
1930 Birthday: The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.), singer, songwriter, musician; an early star of rock ‘n’ roll ("Chantilly Lace"), he died in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the pilot, Roger Peterson.
