VGS Latest News & Tips: 24 September, 2015


Our September general meeting was yesterday at the Savannah Center. We had a very good turn out for a September meeting with about 175 members in attendance. 14 of those were residents who became members today. Our guest speaker was Clyde P. Stickney and his presentation was "All Rise! Researching at the County Courthouse." 
He gave an overview of the types of records that can be found at the county court house.
  • Vital Records: Usually just marriage records, sometimes birth and death
  • Probate Records: For those who died with or without a will.
  • Property Records: Sales of real and personal property between individuals, businesses, etc.
  • Court Records: Both civil and criminal

This Day In History: September 24
1789: Congress passes the Judiciary Act of 1789, establishing a strong federal court system with the powers it needs to ensure the supremacy of the Constitution and federal law. The new Supreme Court will have a chief justice and five associate justices.
1929: The first flight using only instruments is completed by U.S. Army pilot James Doolittle.
1960: The Enterprise, the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, is launched.
1936 Birthday: Jim Henson, puppeteer who created the "Muppets" in 1954 and television’s Sesame Street.
