This Day In History:
1896: Booker T. Washington becomes the first African American to receive an honorary MA degree from Harvard University.
1895: Boxing champ Jack Dempsey (1895-1983) was born in Manassa, Colorado. Dubbed "The Manassa Mauler," he reigned as world heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926. Following his boxing career, he became a successful New York restaurant operator.
1497: Explorer John Cabot lands in North America in present-day Canada.
